Techgardens Secures Router RFP to Upgrade to 400 Gig State-Wide Internet Network

Techgardens was selected to participate in a research education RFP to upgrade an end-of-life router network for a state-wide Internet service provider. The network consists of 30 sites supporting statewide university campuses, health facilities, government offices, and K-12 healthcare institutions, with connections to major Internet peering points and Internet2 connections. The services supported by the network include Internet and Broadband, Research/STEM, and Cybersecurity Services. The objective of the RFP was to upgrade the network from 100 Gig with 1/10 Gig tributaries to 400 Gig core with 10/100 Gig tributary connections. Techgardens was awarded the RFP despite intense technical competition. The new network will offer millions of users across the state the greatest technology servicing, allowing them to reach new technical milestones and greater collaboration.

Utility:

IT Infrastructure GPON Deployment for Smart grid

One of the largest Fortune 500 Utilities in the country engaged Techgardens to assess and develop a solution for migrating from their leased cellular network, which supports their distribution automation and Smart Grid network, to a GPON fiber-based, high-availability geo-redundant architecture capable of sub-15ms failover times. The client was awarded a patent for the model and is expanding the design to meet the same requirements in a hybrid deployment combined with PLTE. In the project’s first phase, we defined the scope, architected the solution, and tested all protocols in the substation environment. After successfully completing this phase, Tech Gardens was awarded a four-year contract to deploy the solution across 300 locations. This work involves ongoing field substation installation deployments, comprehensive project management, and providing all necessary network materials and ongoing support, including site kitting, storage, and sparing. The project scope is expanding, with tests and pilots conducted in other states.

Healthcare:

Scalable Data Center Architecture Project

Techgardens was hired by a Northeastern healthcare client managing the nation’s largest database of privately billed healthcare claims. The project involved soliciting and selecting production and geographically redundant secondary data center locations. Our responsibilities included architecting the networking, security, and storage infrastructures and providing network engineering, operations support, and runbook development. This comprehensive work was completed over a 12-month period. The project’s second phase was to build an archival facility for offline cold storage in an air-gapped and siloed location, ensuring robust security against threats.

Large Enterprise:

Network Infrastructure
Upgrade and Optimization

One of the largest privately held companies in the United States, managing over 400 stores in the mid-Atlantic region with more than $10 billion in annual revenue, selected Techgardens to upgrade its network infrastructure. Techgardens proposed a Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system to replace the outdated Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) system, offering significantly higher bandwidth and improved performance.

Techgardens‘ solution included utilizing dark fiber and implementing a DWDM system capable of supporting up to 96 channels at 200G each, compared to the old system’s 1G and 10G capacities. This upgrade provided the supermarket chain with nearly unlimited bandwidth expansion potential, enhanced control over their network, and multiple layers of redundancy to prevent outages. The DWDM system also delivered substantial cost savings, achieving a return on investment in as little as 18 months compared to a carrier’s lit service. The project was completed in less than eight months, enabling the supermarket chain to maintain its competitive edge through efficient and reliable data management.

Higher Education:

Comprehensive Network Infrastructure Upgrade And Migration

Techgardens was hired by a top 200 university with over 10,000 students. We were engaged in designing and migrating the university’s end-of-life transport network from 1G and 10G to a cutting-edge 100G infrastructure. This project began with a thorough analysis of the existing network infrastructure to assess the environment and identify areas for upgrades.

After the planning, design, and engineering were completed, we developed a detailed network architecture incorporating best practices for a 100G network, integrating redundancy and failover mechanisms for high availability and resilience. Our project management team created a comprehensive project plan, coordinating with university IT staff, vendors, and other stakeholders to align schedules and resources. The project was completed in less than 6 months from design to implementation, while the cutover work was performed in the lapse of a long weekend and with zero downtime.

The upgraded network supports the university’s critical functions, including advanced research, big data analysis, collaborative projects, online learning platforms, interactive learning tools, student services, administrative operations, campus connectivity, security, and monitoring.

Global Financial:

Complex IT Infrastructure Migration and Integration

A Fortune 500 Bank engaged Techgardens for a complex migration project that required designing a high-availability, GEO-redundant operating system. This system involved database and storage integration to support a custom-developed banking application. The project included an in-depth analysis of the current banking environment, a needs assessment, and the design and deployment of a new environment. Over six months, the project encompassed comprehensive project planning, assessment and analysis, design and architecture, software procurement, system installation and configuration, data migration, testing and validation, and post-migration training and documentation. Techgardens meticulously managed each phase, including the step-by-step development of technical testing, staging, and live cutover, ensuring a seamless transition.

Municipality:

Optical Network Modernization

Techgardens was selected to perform a comprehensive upgrade for a municipality’s Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) network in the mid-Atlantic region. This 12-month project began with a detailed audit of the existing network to identify areas for improvement.

We collaborated with the client’s IT team to design a new network architecture to upgrade the system to a 400 Gigabit core. The project’s scope included the audit and design of the new system and the enhancement of network resilience and redundancy. This was achieved by introducing Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs), which offer greater flexibility and efficiency in managing the optical network. Additionally, we will manage the entire migration process to ensure a smooth transition from the old system to the new, high-capacity infrastructure.

The result is a state-of-the-art network supporting the municipality’s growing demands and future technological advancements. The county spans approximately 507 square miles and has a population of over 1 million residents. The fiber network is a critical component of the county’s IT infrastructure, supporting federal, state, and local agencies and education, DOT, and critical infrastructure.
